our senses
This week we talked a lot about our 5 senses. We read books about them. We talked about using all or some of our senses at one time. We went for a walk and used some of our senses. We could hear, see and feel the wind. we saw and heard birds. We saw a plane. We could hear the gravel when we walked.
Tree of life
While we were on our walk we came across a cedar tree. In the classroom we had talked about the cedar tree being the tree of life for the First Nation people. They used the cedar tree for their homes and canoes. They made clothing and baskets from the cedar tree. We looked closely at the cedar tree. We could see it was very big. We touched it. We compared it to the pine tree standing beside it.
In the classroom we read the story, Totem Tale, using the felt board to show the story. We talked about how a cedar tree would be used to carve the animals in the totem pole.
Our second walk
The next day we went out for a walk again. We recognized our sense and we had a mission. We needed to collect five items from nature to use when we returned to the class.
When we were in the class we got our items out of our bag and we placed them on the five frame that was on the outside of our bag (so we could be sure we had 5 items). We compared our items with our neighbours. We sorted our items in like groups. We counted how many leaves we had etc. Senses, nature, and math in one activity.
Math centres
Each day of the week we spend some time engaging in math centres. This is a time when students are given an interactive activity using manipulatives to reinforce math skills. The activities this week are reinforcing number sense. Each day the students rotate to a different activity related to number sense.
Osmos and our names
Ms. Onotera joined our class again this Thursday and everyone worked in partners on the osmos at the same time. The room was buzzing with excitement as the students saw the pictures of their classmates and found the first letter in their name.
Orange shirt day
Orange shirt day is a day to recognize and remember residential schools. In kindergarten we talked about coming in to school and having something special, a family picture, a stuffy etc. to make use feel better when we miss them. Then we talked about a little girl who was given a special orange shirt from her family to make her feel better when she had to go away to school. When she got to school she wasn't able to wear her special shirt and that made her feel sad. We talked about how we need to think of each others feelings and be kind.
Shi-shi-etko
This is a story about a little girl who was preparing to go to school and be away from her family. She wants to remember everything from home while she is away. He Yaya gives her a memory bag to keep things in to remember home while she is at school.
We drew things we would put in a memory bag that were special and would help us remember our family and love.
One of our classmate brought in this book to share with the class on orange shirt day.
