Pink Shirt Day
On Wednesday students wore pink. We talked about kindness and went to an assembly to reinforce school wide anti-bullying and kindness towards everyone.
We also read kindness books throughout the week.
Rainbow Fish
We read the story, Rainbow Fish, by Marcus Pfister. It is about a little fish who is selfish and will not share. He learns the importance of being kind and sharing with others. Then we did a directed drawing of a fish. We added some sparkle scales just like the Rainbow fish had in the story and we colour the entire fish with lots of colours using pastel. They look so nice.
Healthy living
This week we have been taking about ways to stay healthy. How to look after out teeth and how to wash our hands to stop germs from spreading. We read the book, Germs Are Not For Sharing, by Elizabeth Verdick.
We did an experiment with glitter in some hand sanitizer. We each had some hand sanitizer on our hands. We spread it over our hands and could see the glitter all over our hands. Then we washed it off. We could see there was still some glitter on our hands. We compared the glitter to germs and found out how important it is to carefully wash your hands to get rid of germs just like we tried to get rid of the glitter. Then we brainstormed times it is important to wash your hands.
We also did another experiment about germs. I cut an apple into quarters. I took one quarter and placed it in a jar labeled clean. With another quarter of an apple I had all of the students touch the apple slice after they had been outside to play. That slice of apple was placed in a jar labelled dirty. We will be checking the jars next week to see what happens. Stay tuned for the results.
Lines
On whiteboards we practiced making all different kinds of lines. Straight, curvy, zigzag, swirly etc. Then we used a sharpie marker to make all different lines to create art. We finished the project by gluing different coloured tissue paper on a heart for a pop of colour.
